Mars unspectacular

Have you received an email about Mars lately? The one that says that Mars is going to be spectacular and become the brightest object in the night sky, second only to the moon, on August 27. I haven’t got mine yet.

Last year, I received the said email at about this time and forwarded it to my teen-aged daughter. She was excited and told her classmates about it. Later, she asked me to help her search the net on how to spot the red planet in the sky. I found some tips in Sky & Telescope (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/) on observing the sky with or without optical aid. I also found an article there about the “Mars hoax”.

Yup. The August 27 mentioned in the email refers to August 27, 2003 when Mars and Earth made a historically close encounter. Tapos na. Kalas. But somehow, the email gets circulated every year.

It was very embarrassing for me and my kid.
